Ten Decorating Tips for Fall
Rental Decorating Digest

(RDD) Adding seasonal décor can enhance any home with characteristic charm. The fall season is filled with a wonderful bounty of decorative options. The following tips offer ten ways to bring symbols of the harvest indoors.

1. Pumpkins are, perhaps, the stars of fall décor with their orange flair. Simply adding various sizes of pumpkins to a window sill can provide seasonal appeal. From jack-o-lanterns to hollowed-out pumpkins filled with potpourri, pumpkins are a simple way to add autumn accents to any room of the home as well as the patio and porch. Trade your regular planters for a few iron plant cages; fill them with small pumpkins and colorful ornamental gourds for a great new look beside the front door.

2. Dried flowers make wonderful indoor displays. Fall is the time for bringing the outside garden inside. Employing plants with autumn colors like gold, yellow, orange, brown, etc…decorators can enjoy these garden plants wherever they please from the kitchen to the formal living room. Simple baskets work fine to house these dried bouquets that signal the approaching fall season. Adding sprigs of dried flowers and berries to a simple grapevine wreath can enhance your front door.

3. Candles offer pleasure for both the eyes and nose. As days begin to shorten, adding candlelight to various rooms can make a dramatic statement. Choose candles with great fall colors, but also, opt for seasonal scents like nutmeg or pumpkin-spice. Candles make a simple and effective centerpiece for dining room tables during the season.

4. Incorporating seasonal linens into the décor is also a festive measure. Quilts, especially with fall colors, offer a sense of warmth and style to various rooms in the house. Change tablecloths for seasonal ones. Even a decorative pair of oven mitts sporting autumn leaves is a great decorative detail for the kitchen. Fall table scarves and placemats are also ways to provide a sense of the season.

5. Holiday accents provide a wealth of ideas for fall décor. Decorative items that feature witches, black cats, ghosts, etc…can be both charming and fun. Look for subtle ways to incorporate these features into various rooms. Items like candle holders, tablecloths, candy jars, dishes, throw rugs, plant containers, etc…often can be found in the Halloween style.

6. Wicker or paper mache cornucopias, pilgrim salt and pepper shakers, turkey placemats are just a few items that may be chosen for use around the home. The Thanksgiving celebration is frequently at the heart of fall décor with its messages of thankfulness and the grace that comes with sharing.

7. Exchange your white lampshades for simple shades covered with harvest fabric. Craft shades and fabric can be purchased quite reasonably. Use decorative fall fabrics to cover bulletin boards, throw pillows, photo albums, seat cushions, valences, etc…

8. Refresh summer-time photographs with those that show fall or winter scenes. Changing other pieces of artwork with more seasonal selections can have a big impact on your room and create added interest for all the home’s inhabitants and visitors. Look for paintings or illustrations that depict leaf-raking or crop harvesting.

9. Adding removable wall borders and impermanent stencils can brighten rooms with fall charm. A row of acorns or burnt yellow leaves can wake up drab areas of wall space. Small pieces of furniture that depict fall symbols might easily be taken out of storage and placed here and there for effect. Leaf-painted footstools or children’s benches can easily provide a sense of the season when placed for use in view.

10. Finally, use small details to offer subtle autumn accents. A small crystal leaf might work as a fan pull. An amber glass leaf might be incorporated into a sun catcher for a small window. Add items like leaf-splashed doormats, pumpkin-dotted hand towels, or even turkey-shaped can be fun touches for the entire family.

Craft stores often have lots of ideas for seasonal décor. Even a few simple changes in décor can have a pleasant impact and make the autumn a touch more enjoyable.
