Thanksgiving Craft Ideas
Do-It-Yourself Projects for this Fall Holiday
Handmade Table Clothes:
Make prints on a white tablecloth by using any of the following: potatoes cut into shapes, sponges, feathers, corncobs, or even your hands, dipped in fabric paint. Use autumn colored paint – browns, yellows, oranges and reds.
Pumpkin Paper Bags
Color a lunch paper bag orange, stuff it with newspaper, and tie the neck with green pipe cleaner. Paint a jack-o-lantern face on the bag.
Native American Napkin Rings
To make Native American napkin rings, cut ¾ inch circles from cardboard paper towel tubes. Decorate the circles by using markers to draw a Native American design or gluing on pieces of construction paper. Cut out a tiny feather, and glue the base inside the band. Add variety to the table with napkin rings made from different designs and colors.
Balloon Turkey
Blow up a red balloon and knot off the end to form a turkey’s body. Then, blow up a yellow balloon halfway to make the head, making sure there’s an uninflated “nose” at one end, then knot off the balloon. Tie an uninflated red balloon to the nose to make the turkey’s wattle. Cut the feet out from piece of cardboard and attach them to the bottom of the turkey with masking tape.
Turkey Decorating
Another nice turkey decoration can be made using brown construction paper for the body and head. Make a large number of colored feather shapes. Have each family member write what he or she is thankful for on a feather, and attach the feathers to the body to form the turkey’s tail. Hang the turkey on the front door.
Cornucopia Centerpiece
Roll up a large piece of wax paper and insert it in a 9” cone basket. Fill the basket with Spanish moss. Trim the excess paper so that it is level with the edge of the basket. Stick different colored berry bush branches into the Spanish moss at the back end of the basket. Insert the pointed tip of a wood skewer into the base of a Styrofoam pumpkin, and stick that into the Spanish moss as well. The pumpkin should look like it’s in a pumpkin patch.
Decorating Your Table
A budding development in table décor is mixing seasonal fruits and vegetables with fresh flowers to form distinctive and outstanding holiday arrangements. Apples can make great individual table settings or be arranged to form a unique centerpiece. Or, you can create a vase from an upright butternut squash.
These ideas are just the tip of the iceberg. Whichever ones you choose, have fun decorating for Thanksgiving!
